Nature of Occupation
Commercial Artists may work alone or as part of a team under the general supervision of an art director at a company or studio. Many illustrators or commercial artists are freelance artists, this allows the artist to work at home and bill clients at an hourly rate. Working conditions may vary according to the type of art work being done, this could mean working in office buildings, department stores, art studios, advertising agencies, and printing or industrial plants. Artists spend much of their time standing or sitting at a drawing board, worktable or computer. Commercial artists usually work under pressure to meet a deadline.
Salaried commercial artists usually work a forty-hour week. However, overtime may be required to meet deadlines. Freelance artists and fashion illustrators may obtain seasonal department store work on a freelance basis.
Qualifications of the Graduate
Students completing the program would have the qualifications to start in entry level positions with printing establishments, newspapers, advertising agencies and manufacturing firms. Advancement depends on the individual artistic talent, creative ability and education.
